Scheck's Place

Scheck's Place is a beautiful State Forest campground and canoe launch on the upper Boardman River near Traverse City, Michigan. It is very popular with locals & visitors due to the excellent fishing, water sports, hiking trails and easy access to Traverse City.

Brown Bridge Road divides the campground into East & West sides with the canoe launch and a few campsites on the East side. The West side provides a larger camping area on a big loop road in addition to a day-use area with a barrier-free viewing/fishing platform at the water's edge.

There is a total of 30 rustic sites for tents & RVs, handicap accessible vault toilets & water from several hand-pumps. (some big RVs can be accommodated, however, generators are discouraged)  Each campsite has a picnic table & fire ring.

Forks and Scheck's are the only state forest campgrounds on the the Boardman River; both are located on Brown Bridge Road, about 3.5 miles apart.

There are areas open to dispersed camping several miles up-river, north of Supply Road, on the north branch of the Boardman.

The section of river between Forks (up-river) and Scheck's is truly the best of the Boardman.  It's about 4 1/2 river miles & can take 2-4 hours, depending on the type of watercraft & how much paddling you do.  There are many places to stop for a break or take a swim.

Scheck's Trail Camp entrance is about 1/2 mile east of the main campground & provides river & trail access for campers with horses. Paddlers pass the trail camp about 10 minutes before reaching the main campground's take-out.

Just downstream from Scheck's is the 're-born' section of the river; it used to flow into Brown Bridge Pond which is no longer there due to the dams removal project.  The next launch/take-out site down river is Brown Bridge Landing, site if the former Brown Bridge Dam. (aprox 4 river miles).

The campground is surrounded by Brown Bridge Quiet Area (trail map) which provides miles of hiking & biking opportunities; other nearby trails include the North Country Trail (passes through the campground), Muncie Lakes Pathway (can be reached via the NCT) and the Vasa Pathway (the single-track trail head is about 5 miles from Scheck's).

NOTE: Parking a vehicle at Scheck's requires a Michigan Recreation Passport.
